Meet the new site, same as the old site

I've finished most of the migration of our site to Blogger. There might be a few things broken here and there, but for the most part I think we're okay.

Pictures fixed

The “Recent pictures” block should be fully operational now. (SmugMug changed their site to improve privacy and I had to write a tiny bit of additional code for that.)

Pictures having a slight problem

When I wrote the code for the site to display pictures and provide links, I took a bit of a shortcut. Well, SmugMug changed their site’s code, and now my shortcut doesn’t work on new pictures. Hopefully I’ll find time this weekend to fix it.

(Comment from old site:)

And I thought it was my

And I thought it was my fault that the pictures didn’t load properly. WHIPPEEEEEEEEEEEE!

The tag cloud is no more

I’ve removed the tag cloud because some people didn’t like it. You can still access entries by tag by clicking “Tags” at the top.

New blocks: "Google Custom Search" and "Recent pictures"

I’ve added two new blocks to the site.

  • “Google Custom Search” should make searching for information on this site a little easier.
  • “Recent pictures” will always show the latest pictures we’ve uploaded to SmugMug.

Planned downtime for Monday, September 10

Our host, NearlyFreeSpeech.NET, will be down on Monday.

On Monday, September 10, 2007 at around noon Arizona time (3pm Eastern, 7pm UTC), we will temporarily shut down our entire network to complete a migration of our equipment to a new datacenter. We anticipate that it will take four to eight hours to complete the move. All our services will be offline during that time.

If you’d like, you can read all the gory details.

Fonts for viewing this site

(This information applied to the old site.)

If your computer has the font Candara installed, this site will use it. If the characters “0a1c2e” are all the same size on this site, you probably have it installed.

Candara and several other fonts are included with Microsoft Windows Vista and Microsoft Office 2007, both of which cost money. However, you can also get these fonts by installing the free Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack.

If you are on a Mac, you’d probably have to find a computer running Windows, install one of the products listed above, and copy the fonts from there to your Mac. I doubt that’s allowed by the license, though.

New look for site

No one, including yours truly, liked the look of this site, so I’ve changed the default theme. Enjoy.

What software is this site running?
It used to be Drupal with several extra modules, but we’ve since switched to Blogger.

What hosting service are you using?
In addition to Blogger, we use NearlyFreeSpeech.NET. I’m very happy with it. I was also happy with our previous host, Hosting Matters, but NFSN is much, much cheaper for us (by around three orders of magnitude).

Are these really frequently-asked questions?
Nah.
